The Beginner's Guide to Backyard Astronomy

How to Use a Telescope to See Planets and Galaxies... Even if You Have ZERO Experience!

Become an Accomplished Backyard Astronomer

Have you owned a telescope for a while but never managed to see Saturn with it, let alone a stunning Galaxy?

Did you just get your telescope and haven't the first clue where to start?

Well, first of all, you are not alone!

It is perfectly normal for novice telescope owners to feel confused and frustrated. In fact, the biggest reason people give up on astronomy altogether is they have no success in finding night sky objects they had hoped to see.

This Beginner's Guide to Backyard Astronomy course is designed specifically to take you every step of the way from setting up your telescope and choosing the best place to do astronomy, to seeing your first views of planets and deep space objects.

The step-by-step backyard astronomy course that shows you how to enjoy your telescope tonight... and for years to come.

See Beautiful Nebulae and Mesmerizing Galaxies

Following this course you will see detailed views of the five brightest planets in our solar system, six different galaxies, plus another six different nebulae.

On the way you'll also discover the best way of choosing eyepieces, how to measure distances with your hands, how to plan your own astronomical evenings and the star-hopping method all astronomers use to find those glorious but faint deep space objects we all enjoy seeing.

Over 40 easy to understand guides will help you see Andromeda Galaxy for the first time... maybe even tonight!

Keep reading to see exactly what each of the five modules in this course cover.

Five modules take you from the basics of stargazing, to the joys of seeing the moon, planets and nebulae.

What Do The Five Modules Cover?

The 40+ different guides are spread across five modules.

Module 1 - Get Ready for Astronomy

In this module, we look at all the basics of astronomy. Whether you are brand new to backyard stargazing or need a bit of a refresher, this module has you covered. Amongst others, there are guides to:

  • Picking an observing location
  • Choosing the right eyepieces and magnification levels
  • Fields of view
  • Setting up for a night of astronomy

Module 2 - Getting Hooked on Astronomy

It's time to use your telescope to see something. We start with the brightest object in the night sky, the moon:

  • Understanding the phases of the moon
  • When is the best time to observe
  • What to look for on the surface with your telescope
  • Planning your lunar explorations

Module 3 - Doing Backyard Astronomy

Now we've broken the ice with our telescopes, it's time to learn your way around the night sky so that you can move onto seeing planets and deep space objects (DSOs) such as galaxies. Module 3 includes guides to:

  • The circumpolar constellations we all need to know (click here for a free preview)
  • Seasonal constellations for spring, summer, fall and winter
  • How to measure the night sky
  • Plan a night's viewing for any night of the year

Module 4 - The Bright Planets

You now have all the skills needed to get on with observing. In this module, you'll get detailed guides on seeing the brightest planets in our night sky:

Module 5 - A Year of DSOs

We wrap up the course with comprehensive guides to seeing a dozen of the best deep space objects our night sky has to offer:

There is also, of course, an introductory section that helps with equipment needs, as well as a resources section.

In all, there are over 40 sections in this course that you can own forever with a single lifetime purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's understandable that you might have questions about the course. Below, I've answered some of the most common, but email me at Adam@LovetheNightSky.com if I haven't answered yours.

Who Am I?

My name is Adam Kirk.

I've been a backyard astronomer for many years now, and have been steadily improving for all of them! In 2015, I created the popular website LovetheNightSky.com which helps over one thousand astronomers every day.

I was motivated to create this course because so many people tell me that their biggest frustration with astronomy is finding the objects they're searching for.

My mission with The Beginner's Guide to Backyard Astronomy is to help every budding astronomer learn to enjoy using their telescope as much as I do.

Do I Need a Telescope to Take This Course?

This course is designed to help you get the most from your telescope. As a minimum you should have a telescope with a 3" (75mm) aperture.

Is This Course Only for People in the US?

This course that can be used by everyone in the northern hemisphere, including the USA, Canada and all of Europe and Asia. I've included a dedicated guide within the introduction section to explain how to make sure you have the correct view for your exact location.

Please don't buy the course if you live in the southern hemisphere.

What if I Live in a Light Polluted Area?

Light pollution affects so many of us backyard astronomers that I have designed the course to work even for astronomers who live in all but the most severely affected city centers. If you are not sure, find your town on the map at http://darksitefinder.com/maps/world.html

This course is great for anyone EXCEPT if you live in a part of the world colored gray or white on the map.

What Should I Expect to See With My Telescope?

Perhaps the biggest shock all new astronomers get is what planets, galaxies and nebulae look like through a telescope.

We are used to being 'wowed' by glossy, color images from Hubble or astrophotographers. In reality, nearly everything you see in your telescope will be a lot smaller and less detailed than in those pictures.

The absolute joy of astronomy, for me, comes from tracking down the object to begin with, seeing as much detail as I can and then contemplating the fact that I am seeing an object which is so very far away.

What if I Already Know How to Use My Telescope?

Firstly, that's great!

This course is about finding your way around the night sky with a telescope. So, whilst there are detailed sections on setting up and using a telescope, over 80% of this course is about understanding how astronomy works and seeing hard to find night sky objects.

When Does the Course Start and Finish?

The course starts as soon as you buy it (or subscribe) and never ends! It is a completely self-paced online course. You decide when you start and when you finish.

How Long Do I Have Access to the Course?

How does lifetime access sound? If you buy lifetime access, you have unlimited access to this course for as long as you like - across any and all devices you own. I will update the monthly planet guides at least once per year so that you always know where to look for any planet in each month of the current year.

If you choose to subscribe instead, you have access to every section for as long as your subscription is live, including any updates made during that time.

What if I'm Unhappy With the Course?

I would never want you to be unhappy!

If you are unsatisfied with your purchase, contact me in the first 30 days and I'll give you a full refund, with no questions asked.
